Vision Sunday (Dec. 2, 2018)
Study it in Logos (opens the passage in Logos in a new tab)
Illust: Planning and providing for our children’s future. We have a big vision for their future. But it’s not enough to speak the vision, we must work toward the vision.
David had a vision that extended far beyond what others saw and even beyond his own life. Even though he knew Solomon (his son) would be the one building the temple, he did some long-range planning and preparation.
Passage: 1 Chronicles 22:14-19
14 “Notice I have taken great pains to provide for the house of the Lord—3,775 tons of gold, 37,750 tons of silver, and bronze and iron that can’t be weighed because there is so much of it. I have also provided timber and stone, but you will need to add more to them. 15 You also have many workers: stonecutters, masons, carpenters, and people skilled in every kind of work 16 in gold, silver, bronze, and iron—beyond number. Now begin the work, and may the Lord be with you.”
17 Then David ordered all the leaders of Israel to help his son Solomon: 18 “The Lord your God is with you, isn’t he? And hasn’t he given you rest on every side? For he has handed the land’s inhabitants over to me, and the land has been subdued before the Lord and his people. 19 Now determine in your mind and heart to seek the Lord your God. Get started building the Lord God’s sanctuary so that you may bring the ark of the Lord’s covenant and the holy articles of God to the temple that is to be built for the name of the Lord.”

David Made Provision For The Future
- 22:14-16
-
Vision sees…
- Beyond Others: look past your current state and have a clear vision for future generations
- Before Others: sees what happens long before others
- Bigger than Others: have a larger than usual vision of what could happen
-
David Empowered Others In The Vision
- 22:17
- For great vision to be accomplished it’s going to take the efforts of many.
- “Great vision without great people is irrelevant.” - Jim Collins
-
David Gives A Clear Charge
- 22:18-19
- “Vision is what you see with your eyes closed. Sight is what you see with your eyes open.” - Mike Todd
- Question: When you think of preparing for future generations in Boulder, what do you see?
Main Outline:
-
All About Jesus - Jesus is our message
- Our methods will change, but our message will remain the same. Change is healthy for a growing church.
-
Our mission will stay the same: Meet people where they are and point them to Jesus.
-
And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved. - Acts 4:12
- 100 Baptisms in year 1
-
Where the Spirit is present there is life change. We believe Jesus is moving in Boulder. We want to be equipped, prepared, & bold to share Jesus.
- You are the best person to reach the people in your sphere of influence. We are going to be a place where people can come and hear the Good News of the Gospel, but you are going to be the ones boldly taking this Good News to your neighbors, coworkers, family, and friends.
- Known & Loved - Connection is our culture
-
-
Your connection determines your direction.
- The best you is found in a crew
- The most dangerous place you could be is isolated and disconnected. You are not only ineffective in isolation, but you are a perfect target for the enemy. If the enemy can isolate us, he can influence us.
-
Our prayer is that we would see a disciple making movement here in Boulder that would spread around the world.
- “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” - Matthew 28:19-20
- This is why we do Crews & have Accountability Groups.
- Crews and Accountability Groups are two intentional avenues for growing in your faith and building genuine community.
- Illust: What our Crew means to us
- Open Handed - Generosity is our privilege
-
We don’t give for a blessing, we give from a blessing to advance the Kingdom of God.
-
Define Self Sustained
- We are currently sustained by our local sending church, sending agency, supporting churches, supporting family and friends, and your tithes and offerings. It is our prayer that by our second anniversary we are 100% self sustained as a local body.
- We can do this! If 90 people gave $250/month we would be self sustained. That’s resources that goes towards Love Boulder, renting facilities, reaching out to new people, events, worship nights, equipment, church planting, and much more! We can do this!
- “The point is this: The person who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and the person who sows generously will also reap generously. Each person should do as he has decided in his heart—not reluctantly or out of compulsion, since God loves a cheerful giver.” - 2 Corinthians 9:6-7 CSB
- David didn’t give towards the temple out of obligation, but out of opportunity. He wanted to make the provision for future generations and the glory of God.
- Bring Your Best - Excellence is our pursuit
-
We pursue excellence in every area and give all that we have as unto the Lord.
- Excellence is when you care about the details.
- Excellence is when you recognize there are no small tasks.
- Excellence is when you make every effort to make it better.
- “Whatever you do, do it from the heart, as something done for the Lord and not for people,” - Colossians 3:23
- We will always be a culture of pursuing excellence in every area of Pinewood. We will not become stagnant or dormant, but we will always work hard to MAKE IT BETTER.
- Our pursuit of excellence is both from His glory and for His glory alone.
- You pursue excellence in the things that matter to you.
-
Culture of Serving - Servant leadership is our calling
- Servant leadership culture taps into the collective potential of the whole, not the giftings of a select few.
- Servant leader culture is not I do for you, but we do for others.
- Love Boulder and global compassion efforts.
-
Church of influence
- Our vision is that Pinewood would have a global influence.
-
To have a church of influence is to have a people of influence. This has nothing to do with numbers.
-
Influence definition - the capacity to have an effect on the character, development, or behavior of someone or something. 3. Question: If Pinewood Church were to no longer exist in Boulder, would anyone notice?
-
We will not settle for low impact in our city! We will not settle for low influence with our neighbors! We will not settle for anything less than everything we got! 4. As I’m saying the influence of Pinewood, what I want you to hear is the influence of YOU!
-
The name will only be able to touch so many, but there is no limit to our reach if we leverage all of our personal influence for the Kingdom.
-
If we were to take a poll today to see how many people we all influence it would be tens of thousands!
- What are you leveraging your influence for? 5. “just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” - Matthew 20:28
- Committed To Honor - Honor is our commitment
-
-
We are committed to honor one another for the building up of the body of Christ.
- “Love one another deeply as brothers and sisters. Outdo one another in showing honor.” - Romans 12:10
-
Being committed to honor also means being a Kingdom minded people.
- We are a Kingdom church, not a siloed church. We want and need many more churches preaching the Good News every Sunday. We fully recognize that we are not the church for everyone, you may not like our style or culture, and that’s ok. But we want to see you get connected in community and grow in your faith. We will gladly share other churches with you that stand firm on the Word of God and centered on the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
- Flattery puffs up, honor builds up. Flattery is full of lies and the motivation is selfish ambition. Honor is truth and the motivation is selfless love.
- Honor is constructive. It builds them up. The opposite of honor is destructive. May we never be a people that tears others down in the name of “speaking truth”. That is not loving, that is not honorable.
Story: people are easily built up, and easily torn down. How are we building a culture of honor, not just in these 4 walls but in every area of life. Let’s be a people that honor.
-
Built On Love - Love is our motivation
- Our motivation is rooted and grounded in love toward God and our neighbors.
- “We recall, in the presence of our God and Father, your work produced by faith, your labor motivated by love, and your endurance inspired by hope in our Lord Jesus Christ.” - 1 Thessalonians 1:3 CSB
- Love = Sacrifice. C’mon church. Are we willing to lay our lives down for the people around us. Are we willing to lay our lives down for this city. For that close friend or family member. When God calls us to love, He is calling us to a great sacrifice.
Closing:
And this is just the beginning church. Let’s build for the next 30+ years!
I am fully aware that many of you here today have a short term vision for your time in Boulder. I also recognize that many of you here today have no plans of ever going anywhere. You’ve planted your life and you’re thinking of your kids growing up in the best city on the planet. Little Boulder babies.
The reality is that none of us are promised a long life. Whether we plan on spending the next 3 or 30 years in Boulder should not be a determining factor on how we plan and prepare for the future. We are building something greater than a retirement plan, greater than nice bike lanes, better than new hiking trails… we are building the future of the local church that will affect the next generation’s eternity!
In 30 years from now, what legacy do we want to leave? In 30 years from now, what culture do we want for our children?
There’s too many broken, hurting, and lonely people in this city for us to be passive! There’s too many without hope for us to sit around and wait for the right time to bring the provision, to make the preparations, and to bring the charge to get active!
David knew that his time was coming to a close and so he gave his all.
Question: What do you see with your eyes closed?
I see Pinewood Church in every school in Boulder!
I see Pinewood Church speaking into serve initiative for the whole city and helping to develop a culture of serving!
I see Pinewood church having 5 campuses in strategic places throughout the city.
I see Pinewood raising up the next generation of church planters and missionaries out of Boulder that will impact the west and the world!
I see Pinewood’s worship traveling the country leading conferences and filling cities with the hope of Jesus Christ!
I see a movement of God that is untrackable! Crews that spread faster than we can count!
DO YOU BELIEVE IT? CAN YOU SEE IT?
