Stand Alone: Movement Builders Offering
December 11th, 2022 | Casey Middle School
Welcome Guests:
Prayer Moment: Coach Prime
We don’t put our faith in a person, but in the person and work of Jesus Christ.
“First of all, then, I urge that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for everyone, 2 for kings and all those who are in authority, so that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and dignity. 3 This is good, and it pleases God our Savior, 4 who wants everyone to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.” - 1 Timothy 2:1-4
Intro: Pinewood Values: Highlight Generosity Is Our Privilege
Passage: 1 Chronicles 29:1-19 CSB
Then King David said to all the assembly, “My son Solomon—God has chosen him alone—is young and inexperienced. The task is great because the building will not be built for a human but for the Lord God. 2 So to the best of my ability I’ve made provision for the house of my God: gold for the gold articles, silver for the silver, bronze for the bronze, iron for the iron, and wood for the wood, as well as onyx, stones for mounting, antimony, stones of various colors, all kinds of precious stones, and a great quantity of marble. 3 Moreover, because of my delight in the house of my God, I now give my personal treasures of gold and silver for the house of my God over and above all that I’ve provided for the holy house: 4 100 tons of gold (gold of Ophir) and 250 tons of refined silver for overlaying the walls of the buildings, 5 the gold for the gold work and the silver for the silver, for all the work to be done by the craftsmen. Now who will volunteer to consecrate himself to the Lord today?”
- The building is not for human glory, but for God’s glory alone!
- David lived by example and demonstrated a spirit of generosity
- Not built on the talent of a few, but the sacrifice of many
6 Then the leaders of the households, the leaders of the tribes of Israel, the commanders of thousands and of hundreds, and the officials in charge of the king’s work gave willingly. 7 For the service of God’s house they gave 185 tons of gold and 10,000 gold coins, 375 tons of silver, 675 tons of bronze, and 4,000 tons of iron. 8 Whoever had precious stones gave them to the treasury of the Lord’s house under the care of Jehiel the Gershonite. 9 Then the people rejoiced because of their leaders’ willingness to give, for they had given to the Lord wholeheartedly. King David also rejoiced greatly.
- They gave willingly, not out of obligation
- They gave “to the Lord”, not to Jehiel or David
- They gave wholeheartedly, not begrudgingly
10 Then David blessed the Lord in the sight of all the assembly. David said,
May you be blessed, Lord God of our father Israel, from eternity to eternity. 11 Yours, Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the splendor and the majesty, for everything in the heavens and on earth belongs to you. Yours, Lord, is the kingdom, and you are exalted as head over all. 12 Riches and honor come from you, and you are the ruler of everything. Power and might are in your hand, and it is in your hand to make great and to give strength to all. 13 Now therefore, our God, we give you thanks and praise your glorious name. 14 But who am I, and who are my people, that we should be able to give as generously as this? For everything comes from you, and we have given you only what comes from your own hand. 15 For we are aliens and temporary residents in your presence as were all our ancestors. Our days on earth are like a shadow, without hope.16 Lord our God, all this wealth that we’ve provided for building you a house for your holy name comes from your hand; everything belongs to you. 17 I know, my God, that you test the heart and that you are pleased with what is right. I have willingly given all these things with an upright heart, and now I have seen your people who are present here giving joyfully and willingly to you. 18 Lord God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, our ancestors, keep this desire forever in the thoughts of the hearts of your people, and confirm their hearts toward you. 19 Give my son Solomon an undivided heart to keep and to carry out all your commands, your decrees, and your statutes, and to build the building for which I have made provision.
Background on David: David was a man that was passionate about serving the Lord, building the house of God, and leaving a lasting legacy.
David demonstrates great leadership by seeing…
- Before Others: by seeing before others and setting an example of hard work and generosity
- Beyond Others: by seeing past his current reality and casting a clear vision for future generations
- Bigger than Others: by challenging Solomon to stay focused on the main thing, his personal devotion and faithfulness to God!
- Brought Others Into The Vision
“Worthy visions outlast those who cast them.” - John Maxwell
Great leaders not only see current needs, but they stick to the vision
“because zeal for your house has consumed me….” Psalm 69:9a
Title: Generous For All The Right Reasons
Main Points:
3 wrong approaches to generosity
3 biblical approaches to generosity
-
WE DON’T GIVE OUT OF GUILT
- We don’t give only because we have to.
-
Have you ever done something out of obligation?
- Maybe you’ve bought a wedding gift because you felt obligated
- Or you showed up to a birthday party because you felt obligated.
-
How many of you know… “Nothing GREAT comes out of a spirit of obligation!”
- Obligation says “I’ll do it because I have to” or worse “I’ll do it because otherwise I’ll feel bad.”
-
This is not giving willfully as we see in the text.
- Text: Both the tabernacle (Exodus 35 & 36) and the temple were built from the voluntary gifts of generous people.
-
The same is true of the local church today.
- “Now about the collection for the saints: Do the same as I instructed the Galatian churches. 2 On the first day of the week, each of you is to set something aside and save in keeping with how he is prospering, so that no collections will need to be made when I come. 3 When I arrive, I will send with letters those you recommend to carry your gift to Jerusalem. 4 If it is suitable for me to go as well, they will travel with me.” - 1 Corinthians 16:1-4
- Pinewood Church is here because of the faithful generosity of God’s people. Our partners don’t give grudgingly or out of guilt, they give out of obedience and opportunity!
- Over and over I hear our partners and faithful givers say that they are honored to be on the team. Blessed to support the ministry.
-
WE DON’T GIVE FOR AN INCENTIVE
- We don’t give to receive.
- True generosity is not giving to get something in return.
-
Illust: buying my wife a diamond for her wedding ring.
-
I didn’t buy this gift thinking “Where’s my diamond?” NO! This was me wanting to be generous with the one I love!
- Often people are turned off by the conversation of money because of what they have seen on tv.
-
There are televangelists out there that will promise miracle water if you send them a small donation of $70. I’m here to tell you that is not biblical, that is false and it’s a lie from the enemy.
-
There are preachers that will present a gospel wrapped up in prosperity where you get EVERYTHING you could ever dream if you are generous with your finances. Prosperity gospel is evil and a lie from the enemy!
- This approach will leave you empty, angry, and unfulfilled.
-
The TRUE Gospel and spirit of generosity is when you give, you realize that you have already been given more than you deserve! You realize who is the giver! You realize that YOU ARE NOT LIVING FOR COMFORT, BUT FOR PURPOSE!
- Text: David gave not so that he could get something in return, but so that future generations would have a place of worship to God!
-
If you look deeper in the story, David would actually never be able to experience the temple that his provisions provided. He gave knowing it would be for his son and future generations. Let’s leave something of eternal significance to future generations here in Boulder!
-
-
WE DON’T GIVE FOR SELF GRATIFICATION
- We don’t give to feel better about ourselves.
- It is not possible to deceive God. He knows our heart and our motive. If our motive is self interest and self gratification then it is not true worship.
- If we’re being honest, being generous does make you feel good. It is satisfying when you provide backpacks and school supplies for kids that otherwise wouldn’t have the resources to buy them. It feels good to provide meals for families in times of need. It feels good to give of our time, treasure, and talents to love others, but that CANNOT be our motive in being generous!
-
Here we see three wrong motives for giving.
- Got to give - guilt
- Give to get - incentive
- Give and get - gratification
- God is calling us to so much more! This motive of generosity will only lead to pride, let down, arrogance, and self indulgence. There’s a better way.
-
WE GIVE FROM A HEART OF HUMILITY
- “Who am I?”
- Everything we have is from God. He owns all and gifts all and we are called to steward that which He has given with wisdom and a spirit of generosity.
- Text: 1 Chronicles 29:14-16. “For everything comes from you, and we have given you only what comes from your hand.”
- We need a change in perspective as far as our finances are concerned.
- Illust: Borrowing Dan Huddlestons tools
-
WE GIVE WITH A JOYFUL SPIRIT
- “Giving joyfully and willingly”
- It’s a joy and privilege to give to God’s house
- “The point is this: The person who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and the person who sows generously will also reap generously. Each person should do as he has decided in his heart—not reluctantly or out of compulsion, since God loves a cheerful giver.” - 2 Corinthians 9:6-7 CSB
-
WE GIVE AS AN ACT OF WORSHIP
- “Hearts toward you”
- “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” - Matthew 6:21
-
“You may have no other gods, but me.” Exodus 20:3
- The love of wealth and money can easily become a god in our lives. Something we worship. Whether we say it with our words or not, we say it with our actions.
- Anything we trust more than God, becomes our god. And the ones we worship!
-
MONEY MAKES A WONDERFUL RESOURCE, BUT A TERRIBLE GOD.
- He’s not after your money, he’s after your heart. It just so happens that those two things are often together! He desires your worship!
- Submission and adoration is the posture to begin any generosity initiative.
-
Everything belongs to Him, He is worthy, He has called us toward generosity, He has blessed us beyond anything we deserve, our posture should be mere submission and adoration to our Father!
- Story: The journey to generosity // personal journey
- You have my job! You have my family! You have my purpose! You have my comfort! You have my future! You have my MONEY! There is nothing that I’m going to withhold from you God! You have my ALL!!!
- When we talk about giving God our relationships we say “Yes God, take my relationships.” When we talk about giving God our job “Yes God take my job, I trust you!” When we talk about giving God our kids “Yes God, take my kids!” When we talk about giving God our money “Hold UP!”
Closing:
We are here because people gave generously to start a church in Boulder
There are many other churches in Colorado, this Nation, and the world that we will invest in because we believe the message is life changing! The church is unstoppable! Giving is obedience, and it’s a privilege to come alongside the work God is doing here and around the world because it is about His kingdom, His glory!
He doesn’t call us to give what makes sense. He calls us to trust him!
When our belief outweighs our reality our faith and trust increases, when we see God and trust that He owns it all, it will propel us into generosity!
Calling is not hinged on our circumstances, but on His sovereignty.
