Intro:
There’s something about candlelight that slows us down.
The room quiets. The candle focuses our attention. And we’re surrounded by family and friends.
Some of you walked in tonight full of joy and celebration.
Others walked in tired, grieving, anxious, or overwhelmed.
Here’s the beauty of Christmas.
God doesn’t wait for us to feel good before He brings light.
He steps into the darkness… He steps into our pain and reminds us that with Him, the story is never over.
We serve a personal and pursuing God, a God that sent His one and only Son.
Big Idea:
Jesus is the Light of the World, and when we receive Him, His light changes how we see, how we walk, and how we hope.
Scripture: John 1:4–5 (CSB)
“In him was life, and that life was the light of men. That light shines in the darkness, and yet the darkness did not overcome it.”
From the beginning, God’s response to darkness has always been light. When darkness covered the earth, God spoke and light appeared. When sin covered humanity, God sent His Son. And today, at the darkest time of the year, we celebrate the light of the world.
Christmas is not about nostalgia and tradition, it is a declaration that darkness did not win. Darkness cannot win!
“The Lord is my light and my salvation— whom should I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life— whom should I dread?” - Psalm 27:1
“But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ!” - 1 Corinthians 15:57
Jesus Is the Light of the World
Jesus said: “I am the light of the world. Anyone who follows me will never walk in the darkness but will have the light of life.” - John 8:12
Light is not just something Jesus gives. Light is who He is.
He didn’t come to make life slightly better. He came to make a way through the dark. He came to bring life!
Born as a baby.
In an unlikely town.
To ordinary parents.
For an eternal rescue.
Why We Resist the Light
Scripture tells us the light came into the world, and many didn’t receive it. Not because the light couldn’t overcome it. But because the darkness deceives us.
Darkness lets us hide.
Darkness lets us stay in control.
Darkness takes us further than we want to go, keeps us longer than we want to stay, and costs us more than we are able to pay.
BUT…
Light reveals.
Light exposes.
Light invites surrender.
The light didn’t come to remind you of your sin, but to rescue you from it!
Whatever it is in your life that feels impossible to overcome, exhausting to continue without God, or overwhelming to hold on to one more day… Jesus came to give you hope!
Once Jesus rescues you, it doesn’t stop with you. But His light is meant to be revealed to others!
You Are the Light of the World
Jesus then turns to His followers and says: “You are the light of the world.” - Matthew 5:14
Let’s be clear.
We don’t generate the light. We reflect it.
We are not light because of our goodness, effort, or personality.
We are light because Jesus lives in us.
When you trust Him, His light lives in you, His light goes with you.
Shining in your home.
Your marriage.
Your parenting.
Your pain.
And that light is not for our glory. It is for God’s glory alone.
So let me ask you, when people see your life, can they see the light of Jesus?
Illust: Just as the star over Boulder is meant to be seen by everyone in the city, does your light shine brightly for all to see? Or have you been secretive about your light? Have you been hiding your light from others?
Let your light shine! “In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.” - Matthew 5:16
What Light Does
In a moment, we’re going to light candles together.
Before we do, I want us to understand what light actually does.
1. Darkness Confuses. Light Guides.
I installed lights on my staircase. Before the lights, you had to feel your way down. And these stairs were built in the 70’s, they are steep and dangerous. One wrong step and you were breaking something. Once the lights were installed, everything changed. I could finally sleep at night knowing my kids could get down safely.
Light shows you where to step.
Jesus said, “I am the way.”
So tonight, what’s guiding you?
Your decisions.
Your peace.
Your future.
Fear? Control? The pressure to have it all together?
Or Jesus?
Jesus doesn’t just light up the room. He changes the way you walk.
2. Darkness Lies. Light Reveals Truth.
The most obvious reality of this is looking at the mirror in a dim bathroom. It’s lying to you! But turn up those lumens and all is revealed.
Unlike a mirror, Jesus doesn’t reveal to shame or condemn you! He is revealing light to heal you!
Scripture says: “God is light, and there is absolutely no darkness in him.” - 1 John 1:5
The light exposes sin in our lives, and when it does, Jesus is offering forgiveness!
If you’re carrying bitterness, shame, doubt, or confusion tonight, you don’t have to hide it.
The light didn’t come to shame you.
The light came to save you.
3. Darkness Drains. Light Restores Life.
This is where the story turns.
Darkness doesn’t just confuse us and deceive us, it wears us down.
It drains hope.
It steals joy.
It convinces us that this is how it will always be.
Some of you are exhausted. Jesus doesn’t just guide us and forgive us, He restores life.
Isaiah said: “The people walking in darkness have seen a great light.”
There is only one light that sustains through every season… Jesus. Emmanuel. God with us. And the darkness did not overcome Him.
Invitation: Step Into the Light
So tonight, I want to ask one simple question.
Do you want to step into the light?
Not cleaned up.
Not perfect.
Just honest.
Jesus said: “I am the way, the truth, and the life.”
If that’s you tonight, right where you are, whisper a simple prayer in your heart.
“Jesus, I need your light. I trust you with my life.”
Candlelight Moment: What This Light Represents
In just a moment, the lights in the room will dim.
And one candle at a time, light will spread.
As the light moves through the room, I want you to do something very specific. Think about one place in your life that feels dark right now.
Not everything. Just one.
A fear.
A loss.
A relationship.
A season of uncertainty.
As your candle is lit, imagine placing that thing into the hands of Jesus. You are not fixing it tonight. You are entrusting it.
There’s only one source of light that will sustain us in every season, in every circumstance, in every heart break, every loss, and His name is Jesus. He is Emmanuel (God with us), King of Kings, Lord of Lords, Alpha and Omega, the Beginning and the End, the bright and morning star, the Creator and your Friend, He is the light of the World.
“In him was life, and that life was the light of men. That light shines in the darkness, and yet the darkness did not overcome it.” - John 1:4-5
